Psychologists receive extensive education and training devoted to emotional health. Doctoral-level psychologists have a minimum of nine years of post-secondary education. They also have practicum and/or internship experience as part of their training programs. They are expected to participate in continuing education and to stay current. Unlike many other counsellors, psychologists as health care professionals are regulated under the Health Professions Act. What this means is that Registered Psychologists are accountable to the College of Psychologists to follow ethical principles and professional standards of practice in Vancouver and the province of BC. In order to promote oneself as a psychologist, one must by law be registered with the College. Registration entitles psychologists to use the designation "R. Psych." after their names.
Within the context of a warm, compassionate, therapeutic relationship, I counsell adults with a variety of emotional difficulties such as:
- • Depression
- • Anxiety - including panic/anxiety attacks
- • Grief/loss
- • Anger - including anger management
- • Alcohol and drug dependency
- • Addictive behaviors
- • Self-defeating behavior
- • Childhood abuse - physical, emotional and sexual
- • Trauma - including accidents and assaults
- • Low self-esteem
- • Guilt/shame
- • Lack of assertiveness
- • Stress - including stress management
- • Relationship conflict
- • Communication problems
- • Difficulties with trust/intimacy
- • Separation/divorce
- • Affairs
- • Sexual Problems including low sexual desire, sexual addictions, performance problems
The goal of individual counselling is to resolve these emotional difficulties and to become a healthier self. As a healthier self, one is less conflicted internally, less encumbered by imagined limitations, and freer to pursue one's goals and to tolerate love.
I believe that relationships are the ideal context in which partners may confront themselves and grow into fuller personhood. In relationship therapy, I challenge partners to draw on the best in themselves, to look to the best in each other, and to gradually relinquish their defenses in order to tolerate more intimacy and loving sex.
In working with adults, I strive to establish a warm, compassionate, therapeutic relationship in which the client's experience is understood, respected, and validated. Although I use a range of interventions for specific problems (e.g., EMDR for trauma), my primary approach is depth-cognitive-affective-behavioral. Based on the work of Robert Firestone, this approach addresses the psychological defenses that underlie emotional problems, the negative thought process (negative inner voice) and associated emotion that maintain these defenses, and the importance of corrective suggestions for behavioral change.
For further information about my approach, and how it applies to individuals and couples, see the links provided. I welcome new clients, and invite you to contact me by email or by telephone.
