For an introduction to Santa Barbara, Psychologist, Dr. Robert Firestone’s ideas (including exercises) written for a lay audience, I recommend Conquer Your Critical Inner Voice. For Robert Firestone’s most definitive work (a professional book), see Combating Destructive Thought Processes. In Fear of Intimacy, Firestone shows how we can learn to tolerate love in close relationships. In Suicide and the Inner Voice, Firestone delineates how the negative inner voice takes over the thinking of the depressed person, culminating all too often in suicide. In Compassionate Childrearing, Firestone extends his ideas to effective parenting. In Creating a Life of Meaning and Compassion: The Wisdom of Psychotherapy, Firestone articulates a vision of the “good life”. In his latest book (2013), The Self Under Siege: A Therapeutic Model for Differentiation, Dr. Firestone articulates how to hold on to one’s individuality despite the many forces in the family and society that make this difficult.

See www.glendon.org for a detailed list of Robert Firestone’s books, video-tapes, and articles.

See www.psychalive.com for a new website based on R. Firestone’s ideas that provides resources and the opportunity to explore one’s growth in three areas: 1) alive to feelings, 2) alive to intimacy, and 3) alive to children.
